Red Rising by Pierce Brown
5.0
By far the best book I read in 2019. BY FAR. Every page drips with suspense.
Red Rising is nothing short of brilliant and the closest thing to a perfect book: great characters, gripping plot and fantastic world building. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a novel that has engaged me as much as this one, the closest thing being The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
Pierce Brown manages to tell a story that grips the reader from the first page to the last. The main character is likeable and I very much enjoyed exploring the layered world Pierce Brown created through Darrow’s eyes. The plot twists keep coming, they keep the reader guessing. The stakes are high and the execution of Darrow’s ups and downs is exquisite - I didn’t find a single boring page in this book.
I cannot recommend this book enough. Anyone who enjoyed reading Harry Potter or Battle Royal (or the white-washed version, The Hunger Games) will have a great time biting their nails while reading Red Rising.
EDIT:
Re-Read December 2020:
21 months later and still no book that has been better than Red Rising! And I've read another 260 books since then. It really goes to show what kind of masterpiece this is. It holds up well on reread too. It's funny to see all the little details that only make sense once you've read the entire original trilogy. This time round I highlighted and saved some of my favourite quotes.
My #1 recommendations for RED RISING is to go in 100% blind. So not even read the blurb as it gives away the first major twist - which is a shame because it is sooo good.
