Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley
4.0
Read for the Glenview Library podcast.
Probably a strong 3.5.
I had a professor in undergrad who was really into Mosley, and I wound up reading 3 of his books in those courses - somehow, Easy Rawlins wasn't one of them, despite the series being Mosley's most popular work. I've been meaning to pick up more Mosley for...oh, about 10 years now, and that long wait did not disappoint: this is a solid entry in the neo-noir canon, full of surprising twists and turns, seedy characters, and gritty atmosphere. Mosley does a great job making post-war LA come alive - in a lot of ways, this feels like Polanski's Chinatown, but with an extra layer of racial tensions over it. Easy is a fantastic hero in the vein of hardboiled detectives and I hope to read more in the series - here's hoping I don't wait another ten years.
