A science fantasy story about what people will do in desperate needs. The characterization here is very good although the prose could have been sharper (I wonder if the copy I received as part of an award packet had corruption given the poor proofreading, which would explain the latter). The ending is surprising and earned, if you accept the science fantasy conceit of souls and destiny extraction.
