On the day Emilia Morris turns 13, her mother, Rachel, decides to set up camp outside her home (pub) and never speak again. Fast forward eight years, Rachel, and now many of her growing 'community' of followers (both at the camp and around the world) decide to permanently silence themselves, and so, they burn themselves to death. All in the belief that this ultimate sacrifice will create the change the world needs. A world where people and governments 'listen, hear more and talk less'.
Written in a memoir format, Emilia shares her thoughts on being, Rachel's daughter' and is desperate to make sense of the decisions her mother made. Much later in her journey she will attempt to stand up against the shocking projects and messages the 'community' (now an organisation) are implementing under her mother's name.
This is a novel I couldn't put down. It made my stomach turn. I'm still thinking about it as I try and get on with my day. A novel that will definitely make one rethink the true motives and agendas behind any seemingly well meaning organisation claiming to be doing good and helping others (or for the greater good). It may even make you rethink your own beliefs of what is or isn't and what should or shouldn't occur.
