I honestly really love this book. I can’t put my finger on what keeps it from 5 stars other than maybe the fact that it’s a familiar story due to its impeccably faithful series adaptation. Even so, if I were to read the book prior to experiencing the show, I’m not sure it would have been a 5-star read for me. The writing is clear and succinct in a way despite the novel being so long. Empathy for the characters is built within such short, pointed passages and it all feels very true to life - moving quickly but still leaving impact on the lives lived. Madeline is delightful and a friend I think anyone would wish for and the ensemble cast beyond her are lovable in their own ways. I also felt a great deal more impact from the peak of the climax than I imagined I would having already known the outcome. These characters are a satirization but they still feel reminiscent of the types of people you know so that moment - seeing that change in demeanor - just had so much more grip than I imagined it would.

It appears I have nothing to complain about so it’s unfortunate to say that despite this being such a fun read and I enjoyed my time, it doesn’t feel like a story I’ll return to.
