Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
1.0
Harrowhark the Ninth needs a swordswoman, but edgelord Gideon says fuck that noise lol.
Without a doubt my most hated book of 2022. If it weren't for the fact that this was chosen as October's read for my book club, I would have DNF'ed. As it turns out, I've decided I can't show up for the book club meeting anyway, because if I turn up to my first meeting and speak honestly about my thoughts on this book then no one will ever want me to come to my second.
I'm going to keep this short because I'm obviously in the minority. I think if you like Gideon's narrative voice, you'll probably love this book. I found her unbearable, so I didn't. Thanks for giving all of one paragraph for Gideon to get over depression. Personally, I think sci-fi is a genre where you need to pay extra attention to worldbuilding, but the author clearly disagrees with me on this point. Gideon the Ninth survives on its aesthetic and vibes, which most likely add to the love if you are already invested in the story, but for me soon became tiresome. I'm glad I forced myself through to the end, and I hope nothing changes in the upcoming books :)
I will say Harrow makes for a fascinating character, and I care about her enough to want to read Harrow the Ninth even after hating this first instalment in The Locked Tomb, so that must say something about her potential.
