Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates
5.0
I expected to find this book depressing, but I wound up really enjoying it. It was funny at times and I think it might have been a bit uplifting for me because I felt like such the opposite of the people in the book, all of whom are so very self-conscious about how they come across and the image they project. Everyone's afraid of seeming like an ordinary person living in the suburbs yet there they are, incapable of having relationships.
I may have missed the point, but I felt happy for Frank the few times he was happy over some silly thing. I wish I'd written down my favorite line, it was just a note about how Frank feels the particular happiness of knowing all your clothes aer new and really well-fitted. If they could just combine those little pleasures with not being complete judgmental snobs about themselves and everyone else, they'd be happy. But nobody in this book is happy.
Found that favorite line: "He wouldn't have minded going home alone if such a thing were possible (he had a pleasant vision of himself preparing neatly for bed with a book and nightcap, bachelor style); otherwise he was happy enough to stay in this jumbled, lively place where the drinks were cheap and the band was loud and he could feel the inner peace that comes from knowing that all your clothes are new and perfectly fitted."
