Xialolu Guo has a knack for removing the romance from her stories and just being honest about the human experience/feelings. Not to say she can’t be romantic, there are moments of tenderness that are very sweet in her books, but she’s not doing what everyone else is doing—the fantasy of fictional romance. She writes her books like they’re real people; like “me” is your friend or you. It’s really refreshing and captivating and one of my favorite qualities of hers!
She also is very transparent about what it’s like being a Chinese woman and the juxtaposition of culture, especially relationally, when integrating into Western society. I find it very educational and interesting, as the world is ever changing and more and more immigrants are coming West!
I love her, she’s one of my top three favorite authors of all time, and I enjoyed this book. But it doesn’t hit as hard as Chinese-English Dictionary.
