Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett
4.0
the first fantasy book that i read in a long time (apart from my pery jackson reread last autumn)
this was really cool - in some ways i could totally see my more attentive 14 year old safe loving this. maybe some of the stuff would have gone over my head, but i think i would have had loads of fun.
many of the male characters in this novel are great - crowley, azerophael (no idea how to write this, i listened to the audiobook), adam, the old witch hunter guy. i guess madam tracy and pepper are ok too, not great but ok. i just didn't quite like the way anathema was written - she feels somewhat like a manic pixie (or rather witchie) dream girl, only for the benefit of that boring guy whose name i can't remember.
i also loved the personifications (even war, i think), and i liked all the imagery and all the cheeky little details. i started to watch the tv series along the way and i actually think it's a fabulous adaptation - i understood some things that went over my head while reading.
i think i would have liked the worldbuilding to be a little more interesting at times, and i was a big fan of how everything was tied up neatly in the end, but i think i wasn't attentive enough all the way along to get everything.
i thought the way global warming (or rather, pollution and killing whales) was brought up was really interesting - somewhat out of date in the specifics, but quite accurate when it comes to its being (at the very least part of) the reason for armagheddon.
the part on the whaler was the worst part of the audiobook though because of the racist accent. otherwise the audiobook was fabulously read and i had loads of fun. i wasn't captivated the way i used to be by fantasy books as a child / young teenager and i think that's ok, and i am glad to have found out that i can still get through fantasy books and enjoy them by listening to them.
i feel like this review doesn't do the cute little details of this novel justice, but then these are also just some notes to myself as always, so sorry :)
