This was a reread for me and my god did it just remind me of how much I love this book. Andy weir is my favourite author, I absolutely love the way he incorporates science into his fiction. My lil nerdy heart is just so happy. His use of tone is always fantastic and not something I see so often (even though out of his three books they are quite similar but hey I love a snarky and intelligent MC).
But where this books steps apart from his previous works is the emotional impact. This book made me cry in ways I didn’t expect. The characters are so fascinating and each so detailed, and with flaws too!

The retrograde amnesia aspect was also really cool. You get to learn about the MC as he himself remembers how he got to where he is.
A middle aged teacher is not someone you often see as the main character in a sci-fi adventure novel but it worked great. Balanced the criticisms of too much swearing in the Martian but still evoked the same sense of joy from within me. I never cared about swearing (Aussie) but it’s good for those that do.

The plot was sci-fi but still quite realistic, if only just mildly optimistic about the governments of our world. But I don’t mind that bc sometimes we just need a bit of optimism. Humanity at its finest.

And then ofc the star of the show. If you’ve read the book, you know. If you haven’t, you get to find out. Just incredible. That’s what pushed it above the Martian for me.

Fantastic book, I recommend to everyone. Even if you don’t like sci fi normally, I still think you’d really enjoy this. It’s accessible and extremely entertaining and worth your while. Love love love.
