This was a really good book. I enjoyed the jumping back and forth between present and past, you could see the subtle changes between the characters' past and present. The book definitely doesn't hold your hand in explaining the cultural nuances of the world and its people, which I also appreciated. Wells expects the reader to be able to follow along as new terms and ideas are introduced without getting too confused, which I felt she successfully did! While the story deals with self-harm, war, death, and a lot of other tough topics, I appreciate that Wells ended on a hopeful note for Kai and his family and friends. If this remains a standalone novel, I'll be very happy, but if the rumors of a sequel are true I will certainly enjoy it.
