The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett

3.0

I was taken a little bit by surprise. I wasn't quite expecting what I got here. I've previously read [b:Hogfather|34532|Hogfather (Discworld, #20)|Terry Pratchett|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1416342611s/34532.jpg|583655], so I was expecting something more along those lines. I wasn't expecting a collection of short stories. Maybe I should have, given the number of well known fantasy characters that started out their adventures in short stories. Which brings up the second thing I wasn't expecting: the number of riffs on well known fantasy characters. I wouldn't count myself as really knowledgeable of the classics of the genre so to speak, but I knew enough to catch most of the references (except for the final story, that one went over my head if it was a reference to something).

Which isn't to say I didn't like the book. I enjoyed the humor, which reminded me of Douglas Adams' works. And I do like Rincewind, or at least his various reactions to and attempts to get out of the various situations he finds himself in. I'd continue to read the series just for that alone. But now I'm also reading to see how the author will change things from where he started here, to where I started many books later.
