Drown Her Sorrows by Melinda Leigh
5.0
DROWN HER SORROWS takes off with Bree finding the body of Holly Thorpe floating in the Scarlet River with a note in her abandoned car suggesting suicide. The autopsy reveals a different story entirely. Bree and Matt dive further into the case, uncovering many secrets that derail their efforts in getting to the bottom of the story.
This third instalment in the Bree Taggert series shows further character development as we get to know each character a little better than in the first two novels. Bree is continuing to grow in her role as sheriff of Randolph County, and the reader gets to experience the more administrative side of things as Bree lobbies for a bigger budget to hire more officers. The home dynamic with Bree, Luke and Kayla continues to progress as we see them all still learning to cope with the death of their sister/mom. I especially enjoyed Leigh's careful reveal of Adam's (Bree's brother) character, learning more about his inner self and some of the events that have shaped his current existence. The character development is what pushed this novel up to a 5 star read for me.
Bree and Matt have dialed up their relationship in this book, but as with the previous book, they are taking things slow. The romance is definitely a subplot that is slowly unfolding as the series progresses. Very interested to see where their relationship will go!
Some readers/reviewers indicate that the plot of this novel is not re-inventing the wheel and lacks originality, but I found myself drawn in early on as Leigh throws multiple red herrings that lead the reader in several directions before hitting the grand reveal. Yes, I could say there is some level of predictability to the plot, but that did not detract from my enjoyment in any way. The story was well paced, intriguing, and twisty with a shocking ending that took me by surprise as everything came together!
My favourite in the series to date!
