Ivanhoe by Walter Scott
4.0
In a legendary England that sort of was, several love triangles carry out the drama of a land torn asunder.
I liked this, but it was verbose and awkward, where the author "understands" where the Jews are coming from but still treats them like disposable chaff, and where no man wishes to be a slave under the Norman rule, but slaves still exist, complete with welded collars, and where women are the fair flowers of chivalry, but still powerless and easy to be disposed of or accused of evil, just because we needed some drama.
But Robin Hood and King Richard! But a lot of lovely action. But larger than life!
But...but...but...
But this is one of those knightly stories in which only the nobility have personalities, and the common folk have service. It's the ur-example of that type of story, but. It is that type of story.
Recommended if you're looking for the root sources of high fantasy, but please do read with a critical eye.
