1984 by George Orwell
4.75
finishing this book by myself was quite therapeutic for me, and annoyingly is one of the most ingenious things i’ve ever read. orwell’s explorations within 1984 span across the entirety of the fabric of human civilisation - and it’s of no surprise as to why this book gets appropriated and misappropriated and quoted and referenced across the political spectrum. orwell’s observations of the human condition, of power, of truth, of love, of our existence in of itself, are written so… ingeniously , like there is truly no other word, that it allows anyone to relate to it, at any time.
saying this, i do beg people from the right who love misappropriating orwell to actually read the book, read about orwell’s life, and read between the lines before they insist society is becoming orwellian because of the woke brigade. and while it was a very good book, it’s also understandable why this is basically the bible for a lot of men - it speaks truth to their beliefs and validates their fears specifically.
.25 knocked off for , again , depiction of women. julia is handled slightly better than most of orwell’s contemporaries. saying that though, still not very good. probs explains the part my ex loved abt it smh. and while love is presented pretty well, there’s something distinctly straight and male in the way that it is understood.
nonetheless. i do think it is a book everyone should read at some point in their lifetimes. just. it’s very good at understanding the male condition.
