The Silence Project by Carole Hailey

5.0

The Silence Project by Carole Hailey--I have some mixed feelings about this book. It was a StoryGraph recommendation, which continue to be very solid, and as it's a UK published book, I had trouble finding it anywhere in the US, eventually getting it from Amazon. The book is, among other things, a commentary on misogyny and class, a veiled critique of Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood), and an examination of a corrupted purpose, that is, what do you do when your life's work turns out to not accomplish the mission you thought it did. The book is piercing and incisive, written from the perspective of a woman whose mother starts a movement that fundamentally reshapes the world. It's somewhat similar to books like Vox (Christina Dalcher), The Power (Naomi Alderman), and The Grace Year (Kim Liggett), but feels more grounded than the others in a really powerful way. Two thumbs up.
