A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout
5.0
GIVE IT ALL THE STARS IT DESERVES ⭐️!!!
Remember when I said From Blood and Ash is my favorite book of 2020? Well let me tell you that A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire dethrones it!
I could not put this book down because I was so consumed by everything that went down in this book.
If you’re expecting the romance to be a roller-coaster ride then buckle up because starting from the very first page until the very end of the book, there are no stops in this ride.
I found the lore intriguing in the first book, but this? It was engrossing, I was delighted to learn more of the Gods, the Ascended and especially the Atlantians and their lineages and heritage. There were some big info drops every now and then but they were interesting and easy to process. It gave much more meaning and depth to the story.
I’m glad this book got more world-building and we got to see more of the lands that the crew traveled to. I’ve always wanted to explore more of both Kingdoms.
Poppy is as feisty and fierce as you’ve never seen her before. What I loved about Poppy in this book is how determined she was to make her own choices and have her own terms after being robbed of choices and freedom for most of her life. Rebelling against what her heart truly desires, she doesn’t let it sway her from her true purpose but she still allows her heart to feel the new emotions and desires Hawke stirs in her. Throughout the book, we get to see Poppy adjusting to her newfound “almost” freedom and the yearnings of her heart.
Hawke shined in this sequel, although he was still the star of From Blood and Ash yet we truly begin to see his masks fall and uncover the mysteries clouded around him. He maintains his iconic sarcasm and humor that made me fall head over heels for him when I first met him.
Both of them remain on my list of favorite characters because they simply have many layers to their personalities that makes them out to be one of the best characters out there.
Also, Kieran is a delightful treat and his interactions with both Poppy and Hawke are entertaining.
As for the romance, be prepared to be swept off your feet and swoon in every chapter. I promise you that this one IS heavy with romance much more than the first book. I love that Poppy and Hawke worked on their relationship throughout the book considering all that they have went through, it’s not easy to just settle for something until all doubts, lies and truths were unveiled. They maintain such a strong and special chemistry that you can’t help but feel the throes of their passion for one another. Their banter is always the best bits of their scenes but also the emotional and romantic scenes are just... the best description I’d give it is decadent chocolate and strawberries.
Im very pleased that we explored more of Poppy’s Magic because oh my I did not see that coming and Im ecstatic about her new abilities and what it means for both kingdoms and her own future.
And now the painful wait begins for the third book which I’m praying will come out in a few months knowing that JLA is a fast writer and we got the first two in the same year!
