The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

4.0

The book started off beautifully and I really enjoyed the lollygagging explorations in the lives of this Jinni and Golem. Wecker wrote beautifully and sumptuously captured the feelings and relationships of the characters. Unfortunately, like so many other books that start off with a great idea, she seemed to get stuck or rushed into the ending which began to devolve into some kind of Marvel showdown scene that did not feel true to the sensibilities of the book I'd read and loved up to that point. Her author's notes support the theory that she was rushed to finish the book before she was properly inspired. Big flaw in the publishing business. Still, I definitely recommend this book. It was definitely interesting the read a book about Jews and Arabs living in early 20th century New York City without any reference to intercultural hatred.
