The Devil Crept In by Ania Ahlborn

3.0

This horror story is basically straightforward, but also leaves some questions to give it some room to breathe. The main character, Stevie, has what is a very common life in horror fiction. That is, it's a terrible one. He seems surrounded by people who are either brutal or useless. When his best friend/only friend/cousin goes missing Stevie seems to be the only person committed to finding him. But the story isn't exactly a celebration of friendship--it seems like even before Jude disappeared he wasn't the best friend Stevie could have. Unfortunately, he doesn't have much choice since Stevie's mental difficulties (which are undiagnosed because his mothers in this book are united in their commitment to instinctively reacting to problems with children by denying they exist) make other kids make fun of him.
