We Dream of Space by Erin Entrada Kelly

5.0

I really enjoyed this read about a national disaster that's been on my mind lately. I am a graduate student studying education for my teaching license. After watching Netflix's recent docuseries on the Challenger, I was struck by how profoundly and deeply traumatic this event was for an entire generation of schoolkids who watched it live. Erin Entrada Kelly addresses it perfectly. This would be phenomenal to pair with a middle school social studies or science unit on space travel/the Challenger tragedy/STEM ethics to integrate ELA. The author also handles topics such as family dysfunction, experiences of intense anger, and the awkwardness of preteen crushes authentically and with artful beauty. I'm thrilled to add this to my list of books to teach someday.
