The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story by Nikole Hannah-Jones

challenging informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

you should absolutely read this book. it is beautifully done. tracing many different aspects of the current landscape of america back to slavery including traffic, music, diet, and so much more. it is profound and necessary

thoughts i recorded on a couple of chapters ⬇️

the capitalism chapter gave me a different lens to think about capitalism, which i honestly didn’t know was possible at this stage of my opinions on the subject. it helped me to see a specific version of capitalism that exists in the united states, rooted in slavery and built upon the same concepts of slavery, which is not every version of capitalism. as in capitalism doesn’t have to look the way it looks in the united states with its greed and racism and classism and sexism and heartlessness

the self-defense chapter almost took me out. the stories, the violence, the absolute disgrace of a country in so many ways
