Forge of Darkness by Steven Erikson
5.0
Very good. Not what you would expect from an Erikson book, but very awesome. SOO MANY MALAZAN LORE BOMBS. The series is totally almost re-created from the ground up.
Updated February 16th: Still a wonderful read. Lots of things I remembered but then also a lot of things I missed as well -- glad I re-read it in preparation for Fall of Light.
2023 update: after my Malazan re-read last year (both SE and ICE) I had to go back to the ill-fated prequel trilogy (Perhaps soon to be finished?!). Just as lovely as it always was as part of one of the best high fantasy series out there. - brutal, dark, philosophical (almost too much so), touching, funny, deeply tragic. It’s all here. Oh, and it really does paint a new picture on so much from the main Malazan series. Love it.
