The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

3.0

Four American Indian men have one bad hunt then separate and go on their own journeys. But some entity is seeking revenge and will hunt them until revenge is served.

This is a rough one for me to review. I equally loved it but also didn't really like it. Not sure how that makes sense, but it is what it is.

Off the bat, I was put off by the writing style of this book. That tends to be a recurring theme when I read adult horror. I don't like the crude writing and just the way things are described. I also found the writing for this novel to be particularly confusing. I kept having to reread parts because I was confused about what was said.

On the other hand, I think the story is absolutely fascinating. The author blends classic Native American folklore and culture with a sense of dread and horror that we can all recognize. Not only is there a thrilling story taking place, but we also have social commentary and a look into modern Native American culture. These elements combine to create a compelling story that will appeal to horror lovers and other readers alike.

I really wish the writing had been different, because the story is so interesting. I think I will have to give it a 3.5 because of how torn I am.
