Changing Faces by Cole McCade
5.0
While Detective Khalaji recovers, Detective Yoon goes solo, as investigating a case of domestic violence leads him to begin questioning his black and white views on law enforcement. Stepping back from the edge of attraction, we begin to learn more about his complex past in LA, and his ties to a disturbing mystery connected with the violence in Baltimore.
I loved being in Seong-Jae's head for much of this story, and coming to understand more about his black and white ways of seeing the world and his strong sense of justice, as well as his social confusion and hints at his complex past. Both main characters are endearing, complicated and fascinating to read, but I think this instalment benefitted from focusing naturally on Seong-Jae, at a time when it was necessary structurally to do so. I'm getting definite ace-spectrum (demi?) vibes from him, as well as being on the spectrum? I'll be interested to see if any of this is confirmed on page in the future. The author's note, as always, was incredibly moving, and I thought he did a great job counterbalancing a domestic violence case with cracking Seong-Jae's absolutist moral perspective.
