Tradition by Brendan Kiely
4.0
The relevance of this book, in light of the Brett Kavanaugh hearing, cannot be understated. The value placed on the lives of affluent young men comes at a great cost in this incredible story told by author Brendan Kiely. Narrated by both male and female perspectives, readers come to see the high cost of doing business at the private paradise known as Fullbrook. Girls are a commodity for the boys who attend Fullbrook, and the faculty looks the other way, normalizing the behavior and convincing the female students that they should be grateful that the boys are paying them any mind.
It's a stark reality that feels frighteningly relevant after the Kavanaugh hearings. It makes one wonder just how often this kind of behavior occurs in schools across America and whether or not I have turned a blind eye to the needs of our female students, perpetuating the idea that young men can do whatever they want to girls, as long as it's just "boys being boys."
I cannot wait to put this book into the hands of students, knowing it will resonate with both male and female readers. I am so glad I spent some time at Fullbrook, questioning institutional gender norms and the idea that young girls exist for the pleasure of male students.
