Winter: An Alphabet Acrostic by Leslie Evans, Steven Schnur

5.0

I am so glad I've found this little series!! I have spaced out my holds at my library so that I can read each in their own season, and I'm only through fall and winter, but I love them! The poetry is exactly the way an acrostic should work: like a haiku, the form should be soft, and the point is to capture the essence of the word, the feeling it brings. The words are well chosen, and the poems show how each fits beautifully into the moment.
And I rate my alphabets based on the hardest letters. Steven Schnur doesn't cut corners at Q, V, or X! Autumn had the most delightful acrostic for Xylem, and Winter has given us Xyst, words that fit the image and the moment, and prompt a chance to learn some small things for the day! (Being a botany nerd, I knew xylem, but I got to learn that Xyst is simply another type of covered garden walk, like a portico or an arbor!) Still, my favorite for this season was LIGHT.
The woodcut style artwork is sweetly matched to the lyric style. I may very well need to find this set to add to my alphabets collection!
