Lone Women by Victor LaValle

4.0

I don’t normally read westerns, but Victor LaValle makes me think I should be reading them more. Lone Women is an amazing western based on true events, where Montana gave parcels of land to single women and women of color to homestead. It’s a rich tale about survival, family secrets, and finding your place in an unforgiving world.

I love the found family aspect. A band of women who journey to remote land in the hopes of making a future for themselves. When you have nothing, you’ll go anywhere to have something of your own.

I will be reading more of LaVelle in the future. I think I’ve found my historical fiction sweet spot, historical horror.

I read a wonderful interview with LaValle in Esquire where he talks about the Western genre and how it’s used to tell a flattened version of history by its storytellers. And how he embraced a new genre to write this story.
