The End of Policing by Alex S. Vitale
4.0
this was very interesting in its examples and history, but i feel like the conclusion is too soft on this fucking system. there can be no more police. we need to abolish this whole shitty institution that came out od absolutism, the supression of labour movements and the poor as well as fucking slavery. how are we still trying to reform this?
i agree with the author that we need to strengthen other institutions like social work, affordable housing, minimal wage, care for those with mental illness, the welfare state, education. but where in this do we still need a force that is allowed to kill people? to supress freedom of speech and leftist political organisation, racial justice movements and indigenous people?
yes, someone has to look into murders, but why do these people have to go to a school that forms the people murdering black people during traffic stops or for their mental illness? it is so obvious that those murders get covered up and aren't prosecuted.
what we need is more democracy and equity. not only the end of policing but the end of capitalism.
