The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo

3.0

My first Bardugo since I read shadow and bone back in 2012. It was a mixed bag for me, the writing was quite engaging and I was able to overlook some of the anachronisms in the dialogue because it was smooth with strong back and forth. On the other hand parts of the plot felt very contrived, the tournament/competition element felt like it was included because it was a trend in books right now more than because it made any sort of sense for the story or the characters goals. Ultimately I think the book stuck its landing even if the journey to get there was a bit rocky.
