The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

5.0

This was such a great but sad book. I really loved the description of heaven, very imaginative. Susie is killed very early on in the book and spends the rest of the story trying to understand what has happened to her. While in a purgatory kind of state, she can watch her family reel from her loss. The book really delves deep into the effect of a loss on the family, and all the inner workings of people that tend to go unnoticed. It's a very deep and intense book, so I'd suggest high school or older would be best suited to it.

The movie does the book no justice. They chose to focus only on the chase for the killer and skips over much of the hardships the Salmon family is going through. I luckily read the book first, but I feel that if I hadn't, the movie still has the feeling of skipping important information. It's really too bad that the movie was so poorly done as I think Saoirse Ronan was wonderful in the role of Susie.
