The Fury by Alex Michaelides
4.0
I was excited to read The Fury by Alex Michaelides despite the mixed reviews. I can see why it’s divided opinion amongst readers, but this murder mystery worked for me & I found it to be an entertaining page turner.
The straightforward premise revolves around reclusive ex-movie star Lana Farrar inviting friends to her private Greek Island for Easter, only for a murder to occur within 48 hours, unravelling a web of secrets.
More of a “whydunit” than a “whodunnit”, the structure of this one (it’s in 5 acts like a play) and the narration by one of the most unreliable narrators I’ve ever read (Elliot Chase, Lana’s close friend) is what sets this one apart, but I can see how this could potentially be what doesn’t work for some readers. I'm also a sucker for “locked room” mysteries in beautiful, remote spots, so the whole setup had me hooked from the first page. I enjoyed uncovering all the hidden secrets and inner workings of the relationships in the group especially when things started to unravel with surprising twist after twist.
One thing to note, if you haven’t read this author’s 2019 bestselling debut, The Silent Patient, and want to, I would avoid reading the Epilogue in this one as it has a massive spoiler for it – why as an author you would do that I don’t know?!?
The Fury is a winner, offering an original murder mystery escape. Highly recommended for those seeking a captivating read. It's got me daydreaming about a Greek island holiday – may end up costing way more than the book itself!
