The remarkable restraint and responsibility with which Erin Bow took in creating a book that takes place 2 years after the titular character is the only one in his class to survive a school shooting is something else. Bow clearly cares about her readers, but doesn't shy way from talking about trauma. She deftly walks the line, never offering up the gory details. Instead, she weaves dry humor, family love, and unique friendships into a story of hard lessons and healing. Simon, Kevin, and Agate will have a place in my heart for a very long time.
