Strange Things in Close-up: The Nearly Complete Howard Waldrop by Howard Waldrop

5.0

Frankly, stories don’t get much better than this. This is a post-apocalypse story, but the story isn’t about the apocalypse or rebuilding, but about culture and ways of life and how things change, and that’s what makes it work. It could just as well be about Native Americans and their traditional way of life with horses and buffalos rather than old cars and tractors, but by reframing it post-apocalyptically, something refreshing occurs and moves the story forward. As someone who passionately dislikes post-apocalypse, the fact that I think this story is perfect is extra special. One of the very best.
