Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

5.0

Exactly as it says on the tin--and it's a great tin! This is a really strong Gothic story--a young woman received a letter from her recently-married cousin who's now living in a creepy, isolated mansion. Noemí arrives and quickly feels that Something Is Not Right, but isn't sure what. The story then takes a rather Lovecraftian turn. But its take on both of those genres is fun and modern--and of course, Mexican (screw you, Lovecraft!). But all of it really blends seamlessly together without anything feeling anachronistic or self-consciously scolding or anything like that. A heroine doesn't have to be likeable, but Noemí certainly is, and her cousin, Catalina, is great too, though often muted through the evil deeds of the bad guy.

It's fun and spooky and wild and weird and sometimes gross. A+!
