The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
3.0
This is not a review. This is my on-the-fly notes while listening to the audio book. Sharing for me to refer back to - and for the people who start with the last chapter in the book. Lol.
Four agreements:
We make agreements every day, every second. When someone tells us something, we make the choice (agreement) that it is true or not. These will chain you up. Stop you from being free. Before those chains, we were children and free. Free to express ourselves, unworried about the past or future.
1. Be impeccable with your word.
There is power in your words to influence others. Words can enter your mind and stay there forever. Impeccable root means “without sin.” Outside of religion, the worse sin you can do is harm yourself. This means don’t go against yourself with your words. Be kind and loving with your word with yourself. Our word is magic. Lies are black magic, that root into the minds of others. The truth breaks black magic when you choose to believe it. The agreement to believe the truth. When you say something, you make an agreement who you are; when people stay something to you, you make an agreement to agree. Words can be a virus, poisoning the people around you. Don’t use the word against yourself or others. White magic is creation of words and life.
2. Don’t take anything personally.
Nothing people do is because of you; they are living in their own world. Their world is built on their own POV based on their own agreements. When someone calls you stupid, you can choose to believe it or not (the agreement). When people say hurtful things, it is not the words that hurt - it is the wounds they touch. Your reaction is about the wound, not them. Don’t think things personally, ever. Make that choice. Positive or negative comments - don’t take it personally. Don’t rely on others to tell you that you’re wonderful. Believe yourself. Breaking the chains of taking everything personally will set you free.
3. Don’t make assumptions.
Making assumptions and taking things personally is what creates hell. Don’t assume that people know what you want. Humans have the need to justify everything. We need to know everything. So we make assumptions - because we don’t ask questions. We have a fear of being ourself because we fear the judgement of other’s assumptions. Ask questions. Have the courage to ask. Ask for what you want. With impeccability.
4. Always do your best. Always.
Your best is never the the same all the time. It is based on your moods, sleep, energy, etc. Your best will sometimes be high quality, sometimes low quality. But as long as it is your best in the moment, then you can live without guilt. Don’t be attached to the reward from others of your best - do your best for yourself. Must take action to be the best you. Most people live in fear and don’t take action. Without action, you are not living. By doing your best, you have grace with the first three agreements. Do yourself best to find love and honor your body.
These are a summary of “Mastery of Transformation.” (Toltec) You must have a very strong will to commitment and defend these agreements, as the world will try to rip you down. If you break an agreement, start again.
Break old agreements. Until you break old agreements, the ones that don’t serve us, then we are not free. The judge and victim control our mind. We but we aware of what we agree(d) to. When you are not free, your core fights to get out and causes internal conflict.
According to Toltec, domesticated humans are sick with parasites (the judge, the victim, and the belief system). The parasites control and weaken us. If we heal our belief system, then we can battle enemy: the judge and victim. If we want to be free, we need to kill the fear or starve the fear. The initiation of the dead is a symbolic death that kills the parasites.
Change the fear based agreements you’ve made. Made out of fear of rejection and judgement.
Be a warrior. A warrior is dedicated to self. The difference between the warrior and the victim is that the victim represses; the warrior reframes.
Live like it is your (or other’s) last day. This is the initiation of the death. Don’t do anything that will cause guilt if it is their last day. When you live that it is always the last day, you do less harm. And you can be thankful. You aren’t scared to ask questions, ask for what you want, let go judgments. Be thankful. Love your perfection. Love is bliss. Make the agreement to live in love/bliss. This is how you get heaven. Love in action makes happiness. Make the agreement to love.
Humans make agreements to suffer, and that can be hard to let go. It is normalized. Break those agreement.
