The Penderwicks on Gardam Street by Jeanne Birdsall

5.0

It has been some time since we read the first Penderwicks novel as a read-aloud at home. I thought we might forget how it went and get lost with the second book now, but it did a wonderful job of bringing up things that happened in the first book in a natural way.

We adored this book as much, if not more, than the first. The characters are much more developed, which could be due to us already knowing them well. Themes of honesty and “family honor” are handled pretty realistically. Every character (except Iantha, who is pretty much flawless) has internal struggles that affect the family dynamic and are actually addressed throughout the story.

Anyway, the kids requested to skip our planned read-alouds and continue The Penderwicks instead. That says it all 👌🏻
