It seems like Kazu and the Emperor were living parallel lives and one of the morals of the story seemed to be that ones circumstance in life can definitely be effected by environment but also chance. I found parts of Tokyo Ueno Station pretty beautiful and parts depressingly beautiful but I was a bit confused more often than not.
