Woof. If possible, this sequel was better than the original installment. It was sooooo good. I think I was most impressed with the character development. At any given point, I would feel one way about a character and if you asked me again in 2 chapters, I'd feel completely differently. It was so impressive how Chakraborty could make a character switch from role to role with such ease. And perhaps the most amazing part was that when one of these switches would happen, it completely made sense for the character. It makes me completely NOT confident about where each character is going to go in the last book. I'm already dreading the end of the last book because I've loved the first two books so stinking much.
Chakraborty's writing in general is just amazing. She creates a world that really sweeps you away. I found myself just getting lost in the story and completely losing track of time when reading this book. And there were a lot of times when I had to stop reading because I'd reached the end of a section of the lovely buddy read I read this for and every time that happened, it was painful. If sweeping fantasies with political intrigue are your jam, you'll definitely like this series. And if you liked this particular book, you have probably already started (or finished) book 3 ha!
