Grave Expectations by Alice Bell

this is one of the best cozy mysteries i have ever read. not because it is a great mystery (i have read far better when it comes to that, although it was fine i guess), but because of the characters.
oh my fucking god the characters in this. there is the ex cop who doesn't do his job anymore because acab; his nibling, enby icon alex who looks ferocious in whatever they wear and are maybe a little on the nose a gen z person but also just fucking cool; claire, the main character, who is a mess but i love her and soph, omg soph!!! there's a big old country house and loads of pies and stews and soup, ghosts and murder and i loooooved the ending because *spoiler* no love story there, because alex is gay and that is the biggest fucking trope twist i've ever heard of!
usually i struggle so much with the politics and copaganda of crime novels, but this was very, very nice and heartwarming. i would like nana as a grandmother and bash as an uncle turned dad, please.
the audiobook was also fantastic and i am sooo looking forward to the sequel!!
