In the Wreckage by Hailey Turner
5.0
Series: Metahuman Files #1
Rating: 5 stars - I loved it!
Captain Jamie Callahan survived a horrible chemical attack and is now a metahuman. He has been working with the Metahuman Defense Force and leading Alpha Team for three years now and doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon. What he doesn’t expect is his one night stand joining his team.
This was a wonderful, action-packed, military romance. This takes place in 2284 and the world is drastically different from today. Climate change has whipped out a good portion of the world and made it inhabitable. The toxic chemical Splice has created the metahumans and caused mass deaths. This world was just fascinating and unique, especially paired with the action-packed missions the team undertook.
Jamie was a powerful, controlling, and intense leader, but he was also super sweet and protective with Kyle. I loved how he took care of Kyle, especially during their extremely hot and filthy sexy times. Their relationship was intense and started as an instant-lust but quickly grew to more. This book ends as a HFN but I feel we might get to see them finally admitting their feelings in the next book.
Overall, I really enjoyed this unique future with enhanced humans, cool technology, and climate ravaged landscapes. I can’t wait to jump into the next book and see how their relationship progresses.
Trigger Warnings: references to past abuse, military warfare, PTSD
