BATMAN - THE WAR OF JOKES AND RIDDLES : 3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS
I'm not a fan of Tom King . I am one of those person who is still clueless as to why Tom King is so highly regarded . I have read nearly all his works and I still can't come around to liking those works to such high regards. Heck I can count on my fingers the total number of books that I have actually read of King .
That said King has already made some major changes to the Batman lore before coming to this story arc , and I was excited to see what this storyarc had in store for us . Sure enough the depiction of Kite man and elevation of his status , along with the finale that showed a new character of Bruce was fantastic . But that's about all I actually liked in this story arc . Okay wait , correction I also did love the art and the chapter on the 9 course french meal , that was fun to read.
But in the end the absurd story telling of King absolutely killed this story arc . We never did figure out what happened to Joker , in fact Joker as a whole felt very wrongly depicted here , we never saw how the alliances were formed or any battles between characters such as Deadshot and Deathstroke panned out . It was like someone reading a mock draft to an actual story.
There is no doubt the idea behind the story was brilliant , with additions of depth to characters like Kite man and some awesome dialogue and the fantastic art work , this had a lot of potential , but Tom King ruined it for me.
