Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby
3.0
3.5
I figured with all the Ted Lasso I was watching, it was a good idea to go fully immersive in the soccer (or rather football world). Of course, I didn't quite realize that Fever Pitch is actually soccer and more soccer, and not just clips and highlights over other stories.
That said, I did enjoy the book, even if it was a little too much soccer for my taste. I think I would have preferred reading this more gradually, like a chapter or two a week, rather than trying to read it fully like a novel. There was just SO MUCH SOCCER. And I think of myself as someone who tolerates, even likes soccer, but reading about through Nick Hornby's eyes, was overwhelming. So many clubs and names and games that it was hard to keep track of.
I found the writing to be funny, like most of Hornby's works. He was able to capture the spirit and ridiculousness of the sport (I found myself sending quotes and lines to my soccer fanatic brothers) This book made me appreciate the sport and its culture as well as being terrified of it.
