Second chance romance is obviously becoming a common trope over here and The Last Dance currently ranks high on my list of favorites.
In The Last Dance, ballet dancer Achilles is headed back to New York for his final role after living abroad for a few years. While there, he has to work closely with his ex, Patroclus, with whom he had a toxic relationship with a decade prior. We also follow him on a path to self-discovery, as dance is the only thing he’s ever known, and he wants more for his future.
Let me start of by saying: wow. This was a gut punch, but in the best way possible, because it’s more than just a love story in my opinion.
It is clear from the beginning that Achilles is aware that his past actions and behaviors were hurtful (therapy, we love to see it!). Because of this, he genuinely tries to learn from his mistakes and make amends, so his interactions with old and new friends are satisfying to see develop.
As for his new relationship with Patroclus? THE MATURITY! You can see that they’ve both spent time healing, which makes their reconciliation more impactful. Achilles is doing everything is his power to show that he has changed and support Patroclus, while Patroclus is learning to trust Achilles again and be a healthy support system for him.
I wish that there was a *tiny* bit more time of Achilles and Patroclus as friends before they jumped back into their relationship, but all in all, this was an amazing debut with great mental health rep, care to talking about addiction, and a story that will be sure to make you shed a tear or two.
Moderate: Addiction, Toxic relationship, and Toxic friendship
Minor: Drug use and Alcohol
