What an absolutely perfect Emma retelling! Emma is one of my favorite Jane Austen stories and its one where our MC, the titular Emma, runs a hard line between frustrating, annoying, and lovable, but Heron does a great job with her "Emma," Kamila.

Kamila is a gorgeously written, complicated character whose mother's abuse and father's mental illness and health issues have kept her from being her 100% true self. She thinks that the front she has to put up makes her lovable, while others don't fully know her. She loves dogs, her friends, her family, and her community. She loves fun dresses, photoshopping her dog into movie posters, and she loves her small accounting firm that she works at with her father. But many only see the superficial side of her. I adored the way she loved feminine things and she loved her work and didn't feel like she had to choose between those things.

Her love interest, Rohan, was clearly so in love with her from the beginning, and I LOVE a good friends to lovers story. Rohan, although he's the love interest, is a secondary character with the majority of the story being dedicated to Kamila's personal growth. Rohan is supportive, kind, and even when he makes mistakes, he apologizes.

This book takes Emma and transports it to contemporary Canada and its Muslim Indian community perfectly. If you don't like Emma, it could stand alone, but if you do, it reflects the story perfectly.

This book is a closed door romance, with a fairly slow burn. There's many adorable puppies and a great examination of how women are pitted against each other, as well as of classism. Also, so much delicious sounding food!
