Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb
5.0
A high fantasy that felt very domestic and homey as well! It's very difficult to describe how a book about magic and medieval kingdoms made me warm inside but that's exactly what Hobb managed to do!
We follow Fitz literally from the first moments, he is only 5-6 years old when he enters the picture and this book ends with him on his mid-teens. So it's a book with a fairly young protagonist, but the stakes are pretty high and the feeling of peril never leaves the reader, especially on the last few chapters!
I also loved the writing, some may say it can be a bit dense but I think it was really fitting for the story, because sometimes it really read like a fairytale!
Fitz as a character is an interesting one to follow, his moral compass is always developing and changing and as I was reading, I got the feeling that's he's really shaping up to be a very good person!
As for the magic system, it's fairly simple but that doesn't mean it isn't engrossing. Being able communicate with others so fast and using your mind in order to create illusions, etc is something that really captivated me and it was a welcome respite from the very elaborate magic systems newer fantasy books tend to have.
Overall, I loved it and cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel as well!
