Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan
5.0
This stellar work chronicles the month long battle of journalist Susannah Cahalan with a rare form of autoimmune disease that caused her brain to be “on fire”. The actual “madness” lasted a month before her recovery that followed for several months after. This well-written memoir definitely gets a place with my top all-time favourites for leaving an indelible imprint on my mind. There are several deterring reviews that call this book too depressing and too filled with jargon. However, to me, it read like a deeply personal account supported by rarely-known (but extremely important ) medical information. For those more comfortable with the visual medium, there is a film by the same name on Netflix as well.
I have been reading so many memoirs lately. When I think back to a few years ago, I hardly find many fond memories of thumbing through someone else’s life story.
