i LOVED this book! it was full of self-reflection, rooted in the author’s understanding of the Quran, drawing parallels between the teachings and her own life. using the Quran to guide her exploration of her queerness, to embrace her sexuality. i thought it was beautiful for the author to use her religion as a guidepost for becoming the truest version of herself, instead of allowing herself to distance from her religion because of the ways it can be used to reinforce homophobia. absolutely beautiful memoir and do yourself a favor and don’t read the negative reviews on goodreads

“this better world - that is the world i’m fighting for from inside the whale, this world i wanted to be birthed into. a world that is kinder, more generous, more just. a world that takes care of the marginalized, the poor, the sick. where wealth and resources are redistributed, where reparations are made for the harms of history, where stolen land is given back. […] where people take care of each other and feel empowered to be their truest selves.”
