Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

2.5

Dorian felt so insecure about Celaena in this book and thought she was using him. She broke up with him immediately after becoming his father's assassin especially since she didn't seem to see him anymore or even wanting to be his friend but he was also acting like she was completely different person for doing the job he wanted her to do.

I had difficulty liking either Chaol or Dorian in this book. I remember finally starting to ship Celeana and Chaon in this book first time I read it but just like when I reread Crow of Midnight in 2018-- they just annoyed me this time when they had scenes together and not just because he's not Rowan. The romance started as quickly as it ended but still not a moment too soon. Neither was a good fit with her as both male characters distrusted her. At least with Dorian I understood why he kept things a secret but after everything Celaena revealed to Chaol I hated how he never chose her over the king. It's ironic how she loved how loyal and honorable Chaol is but in the end it was their downfall.

It was nice how despite Chaol and Celaena trying their best to keep their feelings a secret, Dorian knew and wanted to move on instead of making a scene. He just wanted her to be happy and even though I'm not sure he really loves her no matter how many times he says he does. Dorian already knew that she deserved someone who accepted her as she is and didn't fear her. Celaena might scare him at times but he trusted her (at least more than Chaol) and she wanted to keep his secrets safe.

Having read this series before I was so happy for the mention of Dorian, Aelin and Aedion as kids.

All in all I was interested in the plot but I didn't care for the romance in Crown of Midnight. I also don't know what to feel about Nehemia after the way she treated Celaena like everything was her responsibility while Nehemia kept so many secrets and didn't seem to care about Celaena as a person. I think after reading Assassin's Blade I dislike how she made Celaena trust people even less. I wish the book would have focused more in Dorian's friendship with Celaena. They were my favorite part of the book besides Mort aka the skull knocker King Brandon put to watch over Elena's tomb.
