Becoming the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar

5.0

This is such a cool series! This is the second in the Boogeyman series, which is fictionalized true crime. It takes inspiration from Chizmar's real life and adds different elements to fully tell a tale. This novel picks up in 2019 after the Boogeyman is finally caught and Chizmar catapults to fame with his previously written book about the crimes. Like the first book, it's written in such an immersive, atmospheric style. This isn't the book to read late at night! It gets a little gory at times.

As the plot advances and we’re given more clues, I found I could not stop reading this one. Chizmar does a wonderful job of building tension and intrigue. It was a little meandering at times, but it's so well-written and a truly unique format. I loved the short segments within a larger chapter. I listened to the audiobook, which is phenomenally narrated. It ends a little abruptly and it's a little messy, like real life. Becoming the Boogeyman is another fascinating foray into an untrue crime story.
