Trouble the Saints by Alaya Dawn Johnson

3.0

I admit, this is a book I wanted to like more than I did. It's complex and there's a lot going on, and the world is really rich - WWII-era New York. The world of gangsters. The main character is an assassin with a gift for knife-throwing--an actual supernatural gift. Other characters also have different gifts, and I really liked how limited they all were, all of them existing on a level where they could be seen as made up. That's what white people do with them--white people don't have "hands" as they're called.

So there's a lot of things going on and the world is great--I wondered if it wouldn't make a really good HBO series, for instance. But I just had a hard time keeping my mind on it because it was complicated and always felt a little distant to me. I just couldn't get my head around it so it was living in my head as I read. But it's definitely worth a read because I suspect if it grabs you it would be great.
